“I want layers.” We hear this ALL the time. But here’s the thing… Layers don’t tell us what you want your haircut to LOOK like. Two people can both have layers and walk out with completely different shapes. Do you want more height? More width? Fullness through the bottom? A rounder shape? A diamond shape? Do you want to keep as much length as possible? Those answers tell us much more than simply saying, “I want layers.” Think of it this way: ✂️ Layers are part of HOW we create the haircut. 💎 Shape is what you actually SEE. It’s the same reason we talk so much about results instead of getting hung up on cutting methods. So bring the inspiration pictures. Tell us what you love about them. Tell us where you want fullness, where you don’t, and how much length matters to you. Then let your stylist figure out how to get you there. Don’t just ask for layers. Layers don’t...

Detangling shouldn’t feel like a battle. One of the biggest reasons we teach consistent hydration is because curly hair doesn’t stop needing water just because we put it away. Braids. Buns. Ponytails. They may keep the hair contained and reduce manipulation, but they don’t keep the hair hydrated. The hair can continue to dry out while it’s “protected.” And the drier it becomes, the more friction we can create between strands. Add naturally shed hair into the mix, and curls can begin wrapping, catching and tangling around one another. Then one day you take the hair down and what seemed manageable before suddenly… isn’t. That’s why we don’t want to wait until the hair feels unmanageable to give it attention. 💧 Add water. 🧴 Add conditioner. 👐 Smooth and separate. 🔁 And most importantly—do it consistently. You don’t need to spend hours on your hair every day. The goal is simply to rehydrate before dryness and tangling have a chance to keep building. Because a protective style can protect your hair from manipulation… but it can’t hydrate your hair for you. 💧

After 20+ years of coloring curly hair, we’ve learned a thing or two about what makes great color work on curls. 😉 While we no longer offer color services, one of the questions we get asked most is: “How do I find a good colorist for my curls?” We may not have a specific colorist to refer you to—but we CAN tell you what we would look for. 💎 🎨 EXPERIENCE Look for a colorist with at least 5–7 years of specialized color experience. Color is a specialty of its own, and experience matters. 💡 AN OPEN MIND They don’t necessarily need to specialize in curls. They DO need to be willing to understand your naturally curly hair journey and work with how you actually wear your hair. ➰ HOW DO YOU WEAR YOUR HAIR? Curly most of the time? Your color should be designed and evaluated curly. Straight most of the time? That’s a different conversation. Trying to make one result perfect for both usually means compromising somewhere. 🎨 COLOR HAS TO MOVE WITH THE CURLS Curly hair doesn’t fall in flat, straight lines. Thoughtful placement should create dimension through and around the natural curl families—not just on the surface. Color the hair where it lives. 🌿 HEALTH FIRST Beautiful color isn’t beautiful if the curl loses its integrity. Look for a colorist who prioritizes gentle processing and the long-term health of the hair rather than rushing to get lighter faster. ✨ THE FORMULA Experience + Open Mind + Curl-Aware Placement + Hair Integrity You don’t necessarily need a “curly colorist.” You need a great colorist who is willing to understand your curls. 💎 Save this for your next color consultation.

At Curls Gone Wild, your first visit is all about education and empowerment. You’ll learn how to wash, style, and care for your curls using the CGW method. If you book a “Discover Your Curls + Shape” service, you’ll also receive a customized dry curl cut designed to enhance your natural texture.

Come with your curls clean, dry, detangled, and styled how you typically wear them. Avoid heavy oils or butters, and don’t arrive with your hair in braids, buns, or ponytails. If you’re unsure how to prep, just text us at (480) 353-8369, and we’ll guide you through it.

No. At Curls Gone Wild Salon, we specialize exclusively in curly and naturally textured hair—and we never straighten curls as part of our services. That means no heat styling, blow drying straight, or chemical straightening. Our signature dry cut, known as the CGW Cast / Dry Cut, is performed on clean, dry, and naturally styled curls so we can cut each curl in its natural pattern. If you typically wear your hair straight, we do not recommend this service. Our approach is all about enhancing and celebrating your natural curl pattern, not altering it. If you’re transitioning away from heat styling or just beginning to embrace your curls, we suggest starting with our “Discover Your Curls” session to learn proper care and styling methods tailored to your texture.
